Knight Hawks Knock Off No. 1 Panthers, Advance to IFL Conference Final
In a first round clash at San Jose’s SAP Center on Sunday evening, the Vegas Knight Hawks pulled off a stunning upset, defeating the top seeded Bay Area Panthers 36 to 31 to punch their ticket to the IFL Conference Championship. Bay Area’s season ends at 13 and 3, while Vegas keeps its championship hopes alive.
Vegas set the tone early. Linebacker James Ceasar forced a fumble on Bay Area’s opening drive and returned it for a touchdown. Quarterback Jayden De Laura then added fuel with a 25 yard scramble that made it 14 to 0 before the Panthers even had a chance to respond.
Bay Area answered with balance. Running back Josh Jones powered in three rushing touchdowns and totaled 92 yards on 15 carries, averaging over six yards per attempt. Teammate Joshua Tomas added two more scores and averaged 7.6 yards on eight carries. Jones kept Bay Area competitive throughout the night.
Vegas leaned on its own ground game as well. Antonio Wimbush led the Knight Hawks with 63 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Ja’Rome Johnson chipped in 45 yards and three touchdowns to keep pressure on Bay Area’s defense.
In the passing game, De Laura connected with Quentin Randolph on a 33 yard gain late in the fourth quarter, setting up the go ahead score that sealed the upset. For Bay Area, Tyrese Chambers and Tosin Oyekanmi both had standout moments. Chambers hauled in multiple key receptions, while Oyekanmi flashed his explosiveness with a short touchdown catch.
Bay Area’s defense, led by veterans Trae Meadows and Joe Foucha, came up with timely stops, including a goal-line stand before halftime, but couldn’t fully contain De Laura’s dual threat performance.
With time winding down, the Panthers had one final chance from midfield. But the Knight Hawks defense held firm, and Bay Area’s final pass attempt fell incomplete as the clock expired. Vegas celebrated a hard earned victory and the franchise’s first trip to the conference final.
